Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking a Researcher with its Asia Division, with a preference that the person be based in Islamabad or elsewhere in Pakistan and speaks Urdu. The Researcher will be responsible for developing and implementing a research and advocacy agenda focusing on Pakistan. The position reports to the Director of the Asia Division.


Responsibilities:

Monitoring and documenting human rights abuses by collecting and analyzing information from a wide variety of sources including governments, local media, NGOs, journalists, diplomats, security forces and others in the field;Conducting fact-finding missions, recognizing the need for innovative methodologies to ensure security of staff and sources in Pakistan;Writing and publicizing reports, briefing papers, letters, news releases, op-eds, and submissions to international bodies based on the findings of your research;Developing and implementing local, regional, and international strategies to change abusive laws, policies, and practices;Responding promptly and thoroughly to queries from the media, public, and colleagues in the human rights community;Strong advocacy skills in presenting human rights issues and concerns to government officials, opinion leaders, inter-governmental agencies, and the media;Working closely with colleague non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and local human rights organizations to ensure that HRW’s work complements and enhances their own work;Liaising effectively with HRW staff located in multiple locations throughout the world to ensure effective coordination and delivery of activities;Traveling domestically and internationally for weeks at a time, possibly several times a year; andCarrying out any other duties as required.

Qualifications:


Education: An advanced (graduate) degree in international relations, journalism, law, or social sciences is preferred.


Experience: Substantial experience working on Pakistan.


Related Skills and Knowledge:

Ability to identify, research, analyze and effectively communicate important human rights developments in the area of specialty in a timely and sophisticated fashion is required.Ability to develop and implement realistic and effective local and international advocacy strategies and tactics in order to identify and seize advocacy opportunities is required.Demonstrated ability to think strategically about the global and local media environments and how to use the media and electronic media to further advocacy goals is required.Knowledge of and experience working in international human rights and familiarity with international human rights law is required.Solid field research and documentation skills are required.Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are essential; Urdu is strongly preferred.Strong initiative and follow-through, the capacity to think creatively and strategically, excellent writing and editing skills, and a dynamic public speaking ability are all required.Strong interpersonal skills in order to work collaboratively within HRW as well as with local partners, government officials and external media partners.Ability work quickly and effectively under pressure with a broad range of people and as part of a team.

Admin Executive / Internet Researcher

We have a vacancy for a graduate with strong computer skills (i.e. good typing speed and strong skills in MS Office and Internet browsing) and good English language skills. You will be involved in:
- Carry out extensive internet research for prospective clients
- Update the databases
- Extensive use of MS Office to organize the relevant data
- Generate reports using the contact management system
- Perform business based research on internet with a marketing focus

Job Specification - Graduate caliber; preferably a computer science graduate (BCS, BIT, BBIT or BSIT)
- Good English language skills (written and spoken) with desire to develop to a business level standard.
- Good typing speed.
- Good computer knowledge in general and specifically in internet researching.
- Full command over MS Office, especially MS Excel.
- Self motivated and team focused individual with the ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines.
- Must possess a high level of personal and professional integrity in line with our core values.
