Consultancy-Training on Food Processing and Fruit Preservation

2. Objectives of Training

2.1 Purpose

World Vision Pakistan needs the services of a female trainer to conduct 03 days training on Food Processing and Fruit Preservation to female communities of 10 targeted villages in tow batches of Sustainable Food Security Project in 04 Union councils of Tehsil Abbottabad contributing towards the achievement of the project‘s Output 1.1: Women and men groups trained in better agricultural practices and marketing techniques. The training will be arranged and delivered into two sessions on cluster level by female trainer/consultant.

The training on Food Processing and Fruit preservation on practical demonstration basis will lead the communities to adopt the necessary techniques for realizing not only self-sufficiency of food requirement in the long-run but it would also furnish them with a tangible means of income generation. The regular interaction, exposure to new technologies, visits to innovative, progressive farmers, sharing and learning from each others’ experiences will increase the awareness and knowledge of the local communities in general and local farmers and orchard growers in particular. This training will help in the recovery of livelihoods of the communities and will contribute additionally in the income generation of men and women. It will also help the communities to reduce their dependency on market and to combat food insecurity in the area. These trainings will benefit female Communities directly and male communities indirectly of the 10 targeted villages including Maira Kalan, Maira Khurd, Pangora, Barian and Sungi Mera from UC Namli Maira, Sumandar Katha and Nagri Bala from UC Nagri Bala, Suka Kas and Kala Ban from UC Nathiagali,  and Bandi Mera from UC Bagnotar.

2.2  Objectives

By the end of the training, the participant will be able to:

ร˜  Understand how to utilize and improve their small land holding through orchard establishment and management.

ร˜  Understand how to take optimum benefits of the existing orchards and fruit plants grown on their land.

ร˜  Understand how to manage field crops and the concept of food and fruit productivity to improve the status of food security at household level.

ร˜  Understand the technique of food processing and fruit preservation and its role in income generation through marketing of the finished goods/value added.

3. Location of conducting Training

 The training will be conducted in 10 targeted villages of project located in 04 union councils of Tehsil Abbottabad including Nathia gali (Villages name), Namli Mera,(Villages names) Bagnoter (same) and NagriBala (same).

4. Methodology

The local languages, Hindko/Urdu will be used for the delivery of training session. Participatory training approach method will be used in which interactive oral briefing will be given to the participants on the training topics with the help of flip charts followed by actively involvement of participants through their practical group exercises on flip charts, presentations and group discussions. Practical exercises will include demonstration and on the spot preparatory work for making the products. An exposure visit will also be conducted to get the participants visited some successful ventures developed and implemented under the similar conditions and scenario

5. Deliverables and responsibilities of Consultant

·    Design methodology/work plan and tools in accordance with current practices and standards; to be used to conduct the trainings, taking into consideration the information given by WVP.

·     Consider any feedback from WVP and make changes to the design of the training as appropriate and agreed upon by both parties

·         To capacitate the targeted beneficiaries on Food Processing and Fruit Preservation with the following training contents:

ร˜  Major Crops(Wheat, maize, Potatoes)

ร˜  Major vegetables (Tomato, cucumber, Chillies, peas, cabbage, salad,Turnip, garlic, onion etc)

ร˜  Major fruits (Apple, Peach, Plum, Apricot and Pear)

ร˜ Chemicals/preservatives: Potassium meta by sulphyde, Sodium Benzoate, Citric acid,sugar, fruit color, salt, spices, onion, garlic, zeera, oil and vinger

ร˜  On the spot demonstrational work regarding processing and preservation

ร˜  . Arrangement of an exposure visit with the logistic support and coordination of the project team

·         The trainer will address needs of participants by tailoring the training accordingly. The training, spanned over 3 days, will be held in two sessions, o,n cluster level each encompassing 25 women participants. 5 women from each village will be selected with help of CPOs. Villages Suka Kas, Kalaban, Sumandar Katha, Nagribala and Bandi Maira will be pooled into Samandar Katha Cluster whereas villages Maira Khurd, Maira Kalan, Pangoora,
Sungi Maira and Barian will be included into Maira Khurd Cluster. First 2 days of each session will be consumed in theory and practical/demonstrational work and the 3rd/last day of each session will be spared for conducting exposure visit

·         Liaise with the WV Pakistan focal person to identify any problems or issues arising and to provide updates on the progress.

·       If required by WVP (due to weather constraints, security problems or other scheduling conflicts) the training days may be shifted to another available date within the consultancy period (including weekends).

·         The consultant will agree to be available on any day during the consultancy agreement and will not agree to any of consultancy work offered by another organization. All arrangements for mobility, boarding and lodging etc. would be the sole responsibility of consultant at his own expense and will not claim for any financial provision for it from the WV Pakistan. Transportation from office to the training venue and back will rest with WV Pakistan Abbottabad Office

·         The consultant will not share and disseminate the information with other organization and/or for any purpose in any form without the consent of the WV Pakistan.

·         The consultant will submit training report on Food Processing and Fruit Preservation within five (5) days after the completion of assigned task. The training report must be on the prescribed LEAP format. The training report will be reviewed by WV Pakistan and may send feedback/ comments on the report to be addressed by the consultant.

6. Deliverables and responsibilities of WV Pakistan

WV Pakistan is responsible for providing the following components to assist in the completion of training process and reports.

·         Provide a contact person to address any concerns or difficulties the consultant may encounter and to oversee the entire process.

·         Provide necessary tools and material for training.

·         Payment of financial agreements that are stated in this agreement.

·         Provide any relevant WV Policies and procedures that the consultant is expected to act in accordance with.

·         Provide transportation to the consultant, from office to training venue in targeted villages.

·         Provide LEAP reporting format to the Consultant

·         Ensure appropriate number of trainees to attend the training

·         Provide all the equipments/material required for the training

·         The training, as mentioned above, will be held on cluster level. Given the nature of the training that needs frequent tasting and eating, it has been decided to conduct the training soon after Ramazan is over. The first session will be held from Sep 7-9, 2011, for Samandar Katha Cluster and second one will be held from Sep 13-15 for Maira Khurd Cluster. The Project staff with the help of CPOs will finalize the potential beneficiaries in the mean time the hiring process gets completed.

7. Timeframe

The consultancy will commence on Sep 5, 2011 and terminate on Sep 20, 2011(with the completion of all of the agreed upon deliverables. All final reports and documentation are to be submitted to World Vision Pakistan (WVP) upon completion of the contract period

8. Logistics

All arrangements for mobility to Abbottabad Office would be the sole responsibility of consultant at his/her own expense and will not claim for any financial provision for it from WV Pakistan.

10. Knowledge, skills and abilities

·         Masters Degree in Agriculture Specially in Agronomy and Horticulture

·         At least 3 years experience in establishing Income Generation activities related to Agriculture and at least 5 years of experience of conducting such trainings with Communities.

·         Excellent communication skills and ability to conduct training in local language of Hindko

·         Sensitive to cultural and gender practices of the area

·         Ability to influence individuals or groups
